Knots That Never Slip
Tie it. Test it. Trust it.
- Why knots really fail, and how to read a broken line end
- Threading the hook when you can't see it
- The 10-second knot test, before every cast
- Knots for stiff fingers and tired eyes
For anglers over 60
Knots that hold, bites you feel in time, a slow retrieve that works. The calm, exact way I guided on Lake Biwa for thirty years.
Six days every angler knows
In Japan, a guide does not tell you to fish harder. He finds the one small thing and fixes it. Here is where each fix is in the books.
I fished all morning and came home with an empty bucket.
Stop doing more. Five quiet rules, and one change at a time, so you know what the fish want today.
Vol. III · Ch. 1 · Fish Exact, Not Harder · p. 11My knot let go, and the best fish of the day swam off.
Read the end of the broken line. It tells you which of six causes did it. Then test every knot in ten seconds, before the fish does.
Vol. I · Ch. 1 · Why Knots Really Fail · p. 11I can't see the hook eye anymore. Five tries to thread one hook.
Four tricks: cut the line on a slant, hold a white card behind the hook, use a threader, or tie at home and snap on at the water.
Vol. I · Ch. 4 · Threading the Hook When You Can't See It · p. 32The bait was gone, and I never felt a thing.
Take the loose curve out of the line after every cast. A curve in your line is a wall between you and the fish.
Vol. II · Ch. 2 · The Slack Line Mistake · p. 19It came off right at the bank.
Set the drag at home, then slow down when you see the fish. The last ten feet are where calm wins.
Vol. II · Ch. 8 · The Last Ten Feet · p. 60Nothing is biting, and I don't know what to change.
Depth first. Count your bait down, find the depth of the bite, and change one thing every fifteen minutes.
Vol. III · Ch. 5 · Depth First: The Countdown · p. 49All six fixes, and many more, are in the three books.

Who writes the books
“In Japan, we don't fish harder. We fish exact.”
I grew up on the shore of Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. For thirty years I guided anglers there. It is a hard lake: clear water, much pressure, smart fish.
Fifteen years ago I moved to East Texas to be near my daughter. On the lake I saw good fishermen go home with an empty bucket, because of small mistakes. A knot tied too fast. A hook gone dull. A bait reeled like it was late for dinner.
These books are those small things, one by one, in the order I teach them.
The books come to your email. Open them on your phone, tablet or computer, make the letters as big as you like, or print them at home and keep them in your tackle box.

Questions
No. Most fixes are things you do with the gear you already own: the knot, the hook, the drag, the way you reel. Where something small helps, like a hook threader or a luggage scale for the drag, the book tells you.
Freshwater fishing from the bank, a dock or a boat. Vol. III has five rules for each of six fish: largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill and sunfish, catfish, walleye and trout.
